Last month we were extremely fortunate to host international author, adventurer, and documentary maker, Matt Dickinson. Award winning author of thirteen books, over the course of two days, Matt gave engaging writing workshops to our students in Grades 4-9.
In his thrilling presentations Matt introduced us to his life as an award winning director/cameraman for National Geographic TV, Discovery Channel and the BBC. He has filmed on Everest’s summit, in Antarctica, Greenland, Alaska, and on top of the highest live volcano in the world. He became the first British film-maker to film on the Everest summit and return alive. His book The Death Zone tells the true story of that ascent and has become a bestseller in many different countries.
Our students enjoyed listening to Matt’s adventures, meanwhile learning the elements of good storytelling and how to write with suspense. Students explored writing about their own personal challenges or writing using unique subject prompts for creating short stories. There’s no doubt that Matt spurred our students’ enthusiasm for their creative writing.
